Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): support for everyday routines

Getting out the door can involve a surprising number of steps: finding clothes, getting dressed, eating breakfast, packing a bag and moving from one activity to the next. For a child with ADHD, planning, attention and transitions may make those ordinary moments harder. Families often come to us with a practical question: “What could help our child get through the day with less stress?”

ADHD looks different from one child to another. One child might forget the next step even when they know the routine. Another might find it hard to stop a preferred activity or tolerate the sensory demands of a busy classroom. These experiences do not tell us, on their own, whether a child has ADHD. They do tell us where to begin a conversation about participation.

Start with one routine

Choose a specific moment, such as getting ready for school. Notice where the process stalls, what the child can already do, and what helps on easier days. A short visual sequence, a consistent place for the school bag, one instruction at a time, or a little extra transition time can make the next step clearer. The aim is to reduce friction, not to make a child complete every task independently overnight.

A useful question is: “Which part of this routine is hardest right now?” It might be remembering the sequence, managing clothing sensations, organising materials, or changing activities. The answer helps you choose a strategy that fits the actual difficulty.

What an OT may work on

Paediatric occupational therapy focuses on the activities a child needs and wants to do. An OT may explore self-care, play, fine motor skills, school participation, sensory experiences and the environment around a child. Together with the family, the therapist can set a concrete goal, try strategies and adjust them as the child’s needs change. Support may include parent coaching and practical ideas for home or school.

OT is one part of a wider picture. Your child does not need an ADHD diagnosis before you ask about support with everyday participation.

ADHD assessment at Lumos

Lumos also offers ADHD diagnostic assessments with a psychologist. An assessment explores developmental history, attention and activity patterns, how difficulties affect everyday life, and information from parents and educators where appropriate. It also considers other possible explanations and co-occurring needs, rather than relying on a questionnaire or test score alone.

Our team can discuss whether a psychology assessment, OT support, or a combination is appropriate for your child. If you are considering medication or have concerns about your child’s physical health, a medical practitioner can discuss those aspects of care. Psychological assessment and medication prescribing are different services.

When to ask for help

Consider talking with a health professional if difficulties are persistent, affect your child’s participation or are causing distress for the family. Bring a few examples: what happens before a difficult transition, what the child does, what you have tried, and what you hope would be easier. That is more helpful than trying to fit your child into a checklist.

At Lumos Paediatric Therapy in Box Hill, we can discuss paediatric OT and psychologist-led ADHD diagnostic assessment for children and young people. Our clinic supports ages 0–18; the suitable assessment pathway depends on your child’s age and needs. Clinician and appointment availability varies. Contact us to describe the routine you would like help with; you do not need to know exactly which service to request.
