Medicare

If you are referred by a GP under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, you or your child may be eligible for a Medicare rebate.

$53.80 per session Medicare rebate
Up to 5 allied health services per calendar year
CDM referral form needed from your GP
GP determines eligibility and refers accordingly

Common co-providers: Speech Pathologist (SLP), Psychologist, and Physiotherapist (PT). If you're already seeing one of these professionals, you're likely eligible for a GP CDM plan.

Private Health Insurance

Depending on your policy and extras cover, you may be eligible to claim Occupational Therapy services through your private health insurance.

Do I need a referral to see a practitioner at Lumos Paediatric Therapy?

No.

As a private practice, we do not require a GP referral for you to access our services, and you are welcome to 'self-refer'. However, if you wish to receive a Medicare rebate for your sessions, you will need a Medicare plan from your GP or paediatrician.

Can I use NDIS funding at your practice?

Yes, if you are Plan Managed, we will invoice your plan manager directly. If you are Self Managed, you will pay on the day of service and claim reimbursement through the NDIS portal.

Please note that we cannot provide services to Agency-Managed participants, as they are restricted to registered NDIS providers. However, as an allied health practice, we fully comply with all NDIS safety guidelines.

How can I get a Medicare plan for my child?

Please schedule an appointment with your GP or pediatrician before attending sessions at Lumos Paediatric Therapy. Your healthcare professional can discuss options and eligibility for various Medicare plans that may be appropriate.

If you explain your reasons for wanting your child to access therapy, most GPs will be willing to write a plan for you, although this decision is ultimately at their discretion.

When booking your appointment, we recommend informing them that you are seeking a Medicare referral, as the doctor may require a double appointment.

Do the Medicare rebates cover the full costs?

No.

If you have a current Medicare plan, you are eligible for a rebate. However, this will not cover the full cost, and you will still incur some out-of-pocket expenses.

If you just want an assessment done, why do I have to do a parent consultation session first?

We need to evaluate whether the requested assessment is appropriate.
It is important for us to understand your child's needs to determine the number of sessions required to complete the assessment, as the duration may vary based on each child's individual attention span.
We must clarify the specific purpose of the assessment, as this will influence the reports and letters needed based on the assessment's outcomes.
We need to gather a developmental history of your child, as this information is essential for providing appropriate context in any reports.

How long does it take to get a report after I have completed the assessment?

It takes an average of two to four weeks following the completion of the assessment sessions to score and prepare the report. In most cases, our clinician will review the report with you during a feedback session.

Will your practitioners refer suspicions of child abuse to the authorities?

Under Victorian law, registered therapists are considered mandatory reporters. This means that if they form a reasonable belief that a child has experienced physical or sexual abuse during their work, they are legally obligated to report that belief to authorities, such as child protection.

At Lumos Paediatric Therapy, we extend this same requirement to all staff members. In most cases, staff will inform parents about the need for such a referral, although they are not legally required to do so.

Can I get your clinicians to write a report for my lawyers or for the courts?

Our clinicians remain neutral in custody disputes and do not provide formal recommendations regarding access or custody arrangements.
